Windows 98 Interface (Internet Explorer 4
enhancements) - see also other enhancements
(August 1998).iso/full/W98Comp/setup1.gif) Much of the new look of
Windows 98 is supplied by the Internet Explorer 4 package from Microsoft that was released
last year for Windows 95. PC Plus produced the Internet Explorer 4 Companion,
a complete guide to the IE4 package on its release and most of that material has been
repeated here for those users who are unfamiliar with the functionality of the IE4
program. If you are running Windows 95 and want to install the complete IE4 package, then
you can do that from this SuperCD by clicking on the Setup icon here (system
requirements: Windows 95/NT4, 12Mb RAM, 50Mb hard disk space). NOTE: It is
recommended that you read all about IE4 before installing it for the first time. NT4 users
must have the Service Pack 3 installed
before installing IE4.
If you are already an Internet Explorer 4 user, you can
browse this section to learn about how it functions and the features it adds to your
system. If
you are an expert user and only interested in the new features offered by Windows 98, then
there are three new additions that involve Internet Explorer. The first is the use of the folder customisation feature to supply a Windows
folder warning and the second is a set of extra
professional-level utilities bundled with the Personal Web Server.
The last is a small tweak to the browser which means
that when you refresh a page it does not redraw the whole screen. This has two advantages.
First, it is very fast as it only re-loads changed data, and second, it does not send you
back up to the top of the page after refreshing as it used to. Instead you stay at the
place on the page where you were when you click on Refresh or pressed F5. Don't forget
also that one of the small enhancements in IE4.01 was the full screen hotkey, F11. You
should also read the section concerning non-IE4 interface
enhancements.
Internet Explorer 4 Enhancements
Internet Explorer 4 includes a whole suite of products.
The main browser is the part which upgrades the interface, but there are also several
accessories that are included that expand the operating system's functionality. Because
these accessories are stored in the Internet Explorer menu, they are dealt with here, but
all the other system accessories are stored in the Accessories
menu. If you have Windows 98 installed (or Windows 95 with IE4) then you can expand
its functionality further with the IE4 PowerToys
which are included on this SuperCD and explained in the Tweaking
Windows 98 section.
